In this interview, well-known financial adviser and radio host, Dave Ramsey speaks about the timeshare resale market. He is absolutely against timeshares because of the financial burden they put on people and because of the lost opportunity to invest the money used to purchase the timeshare. Timeshare owners also cannot get rid of them when they want to. He also says that of the people who call his show, 98% are dissatisfied with their timeshare.

If you enjoy your timeshare & can pay the fees, it's worth owning. Many people own multiple weeks. Ours gets our whole family together once a year which makes it worthwhile. If we had to book a hotel, we'd never get together due to costs & logistics. He is right that timeshares are not an investment. Those in undesirable places can be hard to sell but you can exchange or rent; give yours to family or charity. Desirable locations/weeks sell. We just just declined an offer of $15,000 for ours.

Ramsey's a dunce here. Timeshares aren't 4 everyone but they CAN be great. Instead of owning a vacation home where you have to be responsible for maintenance and renting it out (plus the 100s of thousands to purchase), a timeshare requires that an owner purchase only a week at a desired resort. The owner uses that week on a yearly basis OR trades it for a week at another resort thru a timeshare bank. No R.E. investment, but w/maintenance fees, much cheaper than hotels & they include kitchens!
