Being Gay in the 21st Century (School video)

It is heartening to know that schools are now showing documentaries like these. Compare with "Boys Aware," which was used even into the early 70's. And contrast with the lecture in my "SCARY Anti-Gay Lecture to Kids" video. Is it any wonder straight kids grew up homophobic and gay kids grew up suicidal? Experts back then labeled homosexuality a mental illness because gays were more depressed, suicidal and had more psychopathologies.

In the early 70's, it was finally shown that homosexuality, in itself, didn't cause these problems. It was society's constant disapproval -- like the above Florida lecture -- that was at fault. Overweight kids, minorities, etc experience similar problems such as low self-esteem. Gays raised in a supportive environment were no worse than straight kids (as an aside, this is also true of kids raised by gay parents vs straight parents). And it was realized that previous studies had major design flaws (i.e. gay subjects were recruited from psychiatrists' offices, so OF COURSE THEY'D HAVE MORE MENTAL PROBLEMS! Duh).

This prompted the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from their Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in1974. Of course, many homophobes still refuse to accept the data and conclusions of experts, i.e. Paul Cameron, PhD, a darling of the anti-gay movement who was disbarred from the American Psychological Association for unethical behavior (he claims to have resigned).

Regardless, media such as this video can do s lot of good in fighting homophobia, both internalized (aka self-hatred) and external. I risk a copyright violation because I think my post can help promote this video. Please encourage your schools and other community resources (i.e. libraries, youth centers, etc) to buy this DVD and show it to kids.

I'm gay. I've been out since 7th grade and now I'm 18. It's not a choice, it's just who I am. I have never been happier. This video is great, keep up the good work! :)

1) Innocent babies are born anecephalic or with other deformities

2) Religious countries, i.e. the Philippines, suffer in poverty while irreligious ones in Scandinavia have the best health, lifespans, etc

3) Natural disaster indiscriminately make people suffer. Why not target sinners?

And sexual slavery of young girls is okay! (Exodus 21:7) (Gen 19:5, 19:8). So your bible says that CONSENSUAL sex among ADULT MEN is wrong but sexual slavery of minors is okay?
