The midi file of this improvisation is available on my web site at http://www.lot2learn.com

When 7Note asked me to post a solo piano piece I thought to myself "I'm really more of a combo player, but OK." It's mainly because when I play solo piano, I like to just improvise from start to finish. No AABA form, no set tempo, no recognizable melody - just play.

This improv is based on a descending chromatic scale using either minor 9 chords or major #11 chords - dorian and lydian modes.

After I finished playing this piece I interspersed some interesting pictures to look at instead of fingers and keys.

A one take improvisation for 7NoteMode.

  • Please make it a tutorial. This melody praticly makes me cry !

  • @MyFrenchConnection Thanks for the comment.

  • This tutorial answered a lot of questions I had about modal playing...thanks! And I will be purchasing some of your midi files in the near future.

  • I appreciate the comment - thanks.

  • Dear L2L,

Is this the standard tone of your FP4? Would you recommend this piano? I am just itching to purchase one but would like an opinion from a truly wonderful pianist.

    Kind Regards.

  • Yes, this is the standard piano sound from the FP-4.

  • L2L, this is just amazing! There is a maturity and restraint to your playing that is so compelling. The phrase around 4:35 is a knockout! Your emotional conveyance is at it's best on this piece. Thanks for such a wonderful post!

  • Absolutely gorgeous! I loved the way your hands floated in and out between scenes -- neither music nor imagery distracting from the other, but working to create a multi-tiered work of art for our multi-tasking society. The music was so fluid that many shots seemed to show movement (palm frond rustling, cloud drifting) even though they're still life! I hope you do many more. Best wishes from So FLA.

  • I see these people comparing your improv style to Herbie. I hear Marian McPartland & Bill Evans. Ever listen to Willow Creek?

  • do you happen to still have the midi signal for this?

  • Thanks for the comment Steve.

    I use Adobe Premiere Elements.
