This video was made at the request of my friend John who wanted to see the Marx Williams Crooks in action. The Williams Crooks was in fact a real locomotive made in 1861, and upgraded a number of times during it's career, being retired in 1897. It still survives and can be seen at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota. The Marx version, while not to scale resembles the original nicely. Marx used the road name St. Paul and Pacific Railroad which is also correct. Marx put it out in various sets, The Pioneer Express, The Rocky Mountain Express, The Old Fashioned Mechanical Train and taking advantage of the popular TV show, there were a couple of Tales of Wells Fargo versions.

  • I got to find a Marx William Crooks for my layout, where did you get yours?

  • @pennyf9

I have found a few of them on E-Bay. They get a little expensive, so keep watching and a decent deal will show up.

  • Beautiful sets Steve! I noticed you have a couple Atlas Locos. Their Industrial Rail Loco looks solid and I really like the looks of the Angel Train that is coming out soon.

I like the looks of the Angel Train also but am waiting for you or Bill someone else to get one and report on the coaches and how well they go with 3/16 cars. The one I used here is the Santa Fe with the SF logo covered with black tape.

  • I have enjoyed so many of your videos but this is one of my favorites. I have learned more about Marx trains from you than just about any other source. Recently started construction of my own small Marx layout. Videos to follow someday. Thanks so much for all the fun!

  • You have a neat holiday layout with detailed buildings & animated accessories! The

" Kitbashed " William Crooks steamer does reflect many of the colorful 1800s steamers. I recall reading somewhere that Commodore Vanderbilt started the practice of painting steam locomotives black around 1869 - but I think it took awhile to catch on universally on U.S. railroads.

  • Great sets. You have a nice display.
