This is my first-ever YouTube Rant! Now that I've been out here a little while, I thought it was time...

Talking about Geriatric197, he's an old guy, but he shows youth with his excitement. I'm 15 and I only watch videos that are interesting and youthful. Yeah, I admit, there are some diversity issues, but don't you think the older people may have some towards the younger people too? I have seen that the older people see younger people as foolish, etc. I don't want to argue on this, but I think the ageism goes both ways.

I do agree. I hadn't noticed it much at the time I made the vid (and I might have been guilty of it myself). However, after getting feedback on this vid, I did notice people not taking younger folks seriously.

You make ageist comments in this video. You say that young people shouldn't discount older people's videos because they can learn from their experience. You imply that younger people have no worthwhile experience, and older people have nothing to learn from them.

Not that it bothers me personally, but what Emalina and Blunty said was no worse than your comments.

Hmmm. Not following your logic. Saying that younger people might have something to learn from older people is not mutually exclusive with the idea that younger people have valuable contributions to make. You've made a leap, and put words into my mouth that I didn't say.

As you can see from comments above, part of what I like about YT is the opportunity to hear what younger people are saying.

Ah, ok, hadn't read the comments, that was just something I noticed from the video. Simply saying that young people can learn from old, rather than saying young and old can learn from each other, implies that you mean the learning is a one way street, but if you cleared that up in comments then fair enough.

At the time I made the vid, I hadn't really noticed ageism against younger folks on YT. After getting feedback on this vid, I did start to notice it, but that's why I didn't have that perspective in the vid. So I learned something, mostly from younger folks. Cool!

Ageism is pretty prevalent in our culture, in magazines, on tv, in films, the workplace etc.

I get along marvellously with my parents, so I don't know if young people's fear is in relation to that.

It's probably just that oldER people on represent something that some younger people have trouble identifying with-they know more in general, they have a wider perspective of the world, and are essentially more knowledgeable, for the most part. Younger people are probably intimidated by that, and, in the nature of intimidated creatures, lash out.

Unfortunately, people of every age, race, creed, colour, height, sexual preference and gender are attacked whether they make good videos or not. Everyone is discriminated against equally. I doubt it makes you feel any better...but it's true.

To address the topic of ageism: I personally don't give a flying dodo how old you or anyone else is, I judge purely on the quality of your character, video or whatever else you may be showcasing on YouTube or in real life.

...If I came on youtube and made great videos (well edited, fun, good music) I would be respected despite my age. If I came on camera and the picture and audio sucked and I started out by saying "sorry but I can't figure out all this stuff" I would sound just like their parents and be treated accordingly.

I agree with the idea that ageism is mostly directed at people who remind kids of their parents. That is often our fault because we act that way.

I run an IRC network, most of the IRCops and helpers are in their late teens and early 20's. I am respected despite my age because I know more about IRC than they will probably ever know...

Politichick, that has to be the nicest, sweetest, rant I've heard yet on YT. LOL! I haven't noticed any ageism, just that there aren't many people over 30 on YT. Maybe us older folks should stick together. : )

i dont understand the pronounced streak of conservatism you see. everywhere i look it's liberal "do what feels good" mentality. with no responsibility. and every comment about any politics in general is all bush bashing. so..you tell me where this streak of conservatism is and i will go look for it.

I love your video! I totally agree with you, ageism can work both ways. I think often "old" is used as a throw away word.

I think most of the community sites are geared towards the youth. I think that people older than 25 are looked at as if they are just trying to keep their youth by joining these sites. I need to get my cam working so I can respond better to these topics. Great topic for sure.

Kids who are under 20 think anyone 20 and older is ancient. They can't help being stupid and young.. they think the internet magically appeared, and is just for them.. despite the fact I was on it before they were out of diapers.
