    Breaking the fourth wall, as this is called, has been done for decades. It's been done in dozens of films, including The Wizard of Oz. Google "TV Tropes breaking the fourth wall", there's a massive list on the tvtropes wiki. (You will spend HOURS on that web site, I promise you.)
