Viewers asked for a basic stretching routine. This is what I use for a quick 5 minute warm up routine. Make sure you are warm and at least sweating before stretching. And don't forget to stretch more after practice.

  • Before joining a boxing gym, what level of fitness should one have? Specifically as far as pushups, pullups, squats, ect.

  • @chiconspiracy: I've seen a lot of out of shape guys get in shape at gyms because that is what they needed psychologically. But if you are interested in competing, or getting the most out of the gym, I would say: 1) Running 3 miles in under 22 minutes 2) 10 pull ups 3) 30 push ups 4) 50-100 squats without weight.

Also I recommend doing neck-ups. YouTube: Neck-ups Pope.

  • I did not weight train a lot when I was competing. Whenever I do weight train, between sets I run in place and punch, so that my muscles are still loose enough to punch. Try it, you'll notice how slow your punching gets when your muscles are "pumped".

-I agree that dynamic stretching is more appropriate as a warm up, and some people are able to start their routine without stretching, as long as they do some good static stretching after the work out. Massage and stretch your IT's when possible.

  • @albertpope Yeah I'm as fast as greased lighting but one time I put on 40 pounds body-building and I could not punch at all. It sucked! My wrestling was very powerful though...

  • @mattydizzle -Totally! That's the trade off. When I wrestled at Brown we lifted pretty hard several times a week.

  • Very helpful video.

  • This is really helpfull thanks for uploading it. Do you think shadow boxing is ok as a warm up before stretching? I do a bit of sparring and bag work, but nothing to major really, it's more of a hobby with me.

  • hello sir, i am from india actually i just joined boxing class, so i need some basic steps...!

  • @albertpope

Ah good. I used to be at a Muay Thai gym, but that was a year ago. My cardio is definitely not so good now, but I'm good to go on the pushups and squats.

  • thanks a lot Albert :)

  • @albertpope My wrestling requires less strength because I have a knack for feeling and controlling balance and leverage. My cousin thought for years that I had super strength but I'm only slightly stronger than I look. I can just use his weight and momentum against him. I'm only 5' 4" by the way.
