Suki Sa (I Love You) Eng - Extended - Maison Ikkoku Opening

Once again the translation is not word for word. This one also took me awhile. I'm not certain about much of the translation, so if I got something wrong please just point it out to me.

Like always I started with some pre-existing translations. Although in this instance I deviated quite a bit in some areas which has me a little worried- especially since they involve words that I am not familiar with. The translations I used to start with were:

I think Huang really departed from the true lyrics to try and keep the rhyme. Instead of trying to rhyme all the same spots, I instead used a rhyme of ABABCC. Which was pretty hard and sometimes I wonder if the way it forced certain lyrics was worth it.

Some specific changes. Instead of "Though the winds contrary blow" it should be more like "The contrary winds separate us". This is a significant change in emphasis, but I liked the first lyrics so much better that I went with them anyway.

"kaerenai anata no hada ni mo" is given in both the other translations as something like "No retreating, your skin". Which doesn't make much sense, even though it does mean "skin" or sometimes "naked". I kept thinking to myself that maybe it meant that the person being sung to also was feeling the same attraction. And after looking through all my textbooks and several dictionaries... I found that sometimes instead of "skin" it can be used to mean "disposition". So I took that as confirmation, and expressed it by also using body language "You're leaning forward too"

The next line is more about the parting being "inevitable" or "fate" but I couldn't really fit that in, so I decided to go back to the being "forced" apart that I skipped over earlier. Both of the other translations are missing the part, which is in there, about the parting occurring "just before". Although the song never says exactly what was about to happen I think we can guess. (Notice how well this song actually fits Godai and Kyoko- or Mitaka and Kyoko for that matter... looking at it from Mitaka's view).

What I put as "struggles" was another word I didn't know, and I didn't feel the other translations had it right either. Near as I can piece out it means something like "heartbreaking effort" or maybe "heartbreaking troubles".

The next line had an interesting alternate translation of "park" or "garden" instead of "sentiment" and "manure" instead of "voice". So I think there might have been a pun there about how all these troubles in love were like fertilizer in a garden.

Those are the main changes and confusions I had. Like I said, feel free to point out where I made a mistake, since I'm sure I made some.

Once again I extended the video to fit the extended version of the song. Fitting the subtitles in was harder this time, I really wish I had something better than Windows Movie Maker to do this in.

This song is like an intense love that hurts and shakes a persons being to the core. Like realizing that your in love with someone for the first time, and not knowing what to do about it. Looking at that someones face, and having your heart cry out in agitation with every fiber of your being....SUKI SA!

@SmileCavy86 I listened to this song all of last summer because it perfectly expressed what you described; i had just broken up with my boyfriend and realized just how strongly I felt about him. I saw him two weeks after, and it hurt so bad...ugh. But I just love this song because of how passionate it sounds anyway. :D

@1madmartagan1 Both of those sources are good. I like the Martin translation over the Huang.

Being from the same time frame and ages that the anime is set in, I see how even our English words have changed over time. It is the same with Japanese. My oldest daughter has take three years of Japanese but today's Japanese does not seem to use the same phrasing or selection of words from back in the late 70's and early 80's. There are so many new ways to express feelings today then back then!
