Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947)
L'Enamourée (The Loved One)
Text: Théodore de Banville arr: Andreas N. Tarkmann
Anna Netrebko, soprano
Ils se disent, ma colombe,
Que tu rêves, morte encore,
Sous la pierre d'une tombe:
Mais pour l'âme qui t'adore
Tu t'éveilles ranimée,
Ô pensive bien-aimée!
Par les blanches nuits d'étoiles,
Dans la brise qui murmure,
Je caresse tes longs voiles,
Ta mouvante chevelure,
Et tes ailes demi-closes
Qui voltigent sur les roses.
Ô délices! je respire
Tes divines tresses blondes;
Ta voix pure, cette lyre,
Suit la vague sur les ondes,
Et, suave, les effleure,
Comme un cygne qui se pleure!
I became a fan after her concert this past summer in Berlin with her husband and Jonas Kaufmann but I do wish she pay more attention to language. Yes, she has a beautiful voice but opera and song are so much more meangingful if the text is treated as imiportant as the sung line. Haning said that she sings this almost as beautifully as de l os Angeles.

@Mysonicsuitcase What do you mean by that? How is her being a lesbian (not that she is, just hypothetically) explain her shrieking (and I don't think she is)? I just want to know what backs up this theory of yours.

Woah! I personally don't like when she sings in french -And I do like her-. But here she's more that great.
Ne me plaît pas quand elle chante en français, mais elle a été magnifique

She has a good voice but I think the majority of her success comes from her talent as an incredible stage actress and all around performer. I really wasn't a fan until I saw her La Traviata on DVD. The experience of her total performance is what sets her apart.

Ugh, I don't like the orchestral version at all.

It is so pretentious when people make comments about pronunciation as if it matters. When one sings a language, it always sounds different from that spoken language, anyway. I am an English speaker yet often cannot understand my own language and it has nothing to do with the performance, merely sung sounds are different. Caruso sang in English - are you going to quibble that he didn't pronounce English perfectly? Those who can, do, those who can't criticize. Get off your snarky high horses.
