Irish History-Monsignor O'Neill (Flight of the Earls) 1 of 4

A short talk by Monsignor O'Neill on the anniversary of the "Flight of the Earls" which took place throughout 2007 in Dungannon. Monsignor O'Neill, who currently resides in San Diego Califonia, was invited to speak at the commemoration in Dungannon on the count that he is a direct descendant of the 'Great O'Neill' and that the Monsignor, who was born in 1915, is possibly the oldest living O'Neill in the world.

I do speak Irish, however I am not fluent in the language. If one doesn't understand their own history or traditions, regardless if they have a knowledge of the language, then the traditions of that country die and so the culture dies. The Cornish for example don't speak Cornish yet they are very much connected to Conish and Celtic culture, they are racially different from Anglo-Saxon and Norman culure yet speak the same common language :ie English.

Racially, there is no difference between people in Cornwall and the rest of Britain. That was proven about 10 years ago through genetic testing. Any Anglo-Saxon influence in Britain was cultural and not racial. Whether some people "feel" connected to any particular culture is besides the point. Language is the carrier of culture, without the language it becomes something other. Whether that "something other" is a valid expression of the original culture is another issue.

I suppose by your reckoning then only the fluent 250,000 thousand Irish people who speak Irish are the only ones truely in touch with their culture. Obviously you only speak one language so you have no idea in how it can change ones perspective. People can take part in a culture but until they know the language of that culture, they only can get a small glimpse of it. If not then there would be no reason to learn languages and people like yourself can go through life without having to make an effort. Everyone wants to do things the easy way nowadays. To be part of any culture other than your own requires some work, wouldn't you agree?

I am from Fermanagh I am a Maguire...We Irish have more Gaelic Speakers than Scotland or Cornwall...However.. I lived on the Welsh English Border...just inside wales in Wrexham...anyway The Welsh have more of their native speakers again "Literally"..even though the population is maybe half or 3/5s smaller than Ireland...The Welsh "Native Britons" are holding on to their past allot stronger than the Irish.....
