My grandpa and I danced at my wedding to this song. He died 4/5/12 and so I'm listening to it for him.

I'm nearly 60-years old and this song makes me almost want to cry - about what this country could have been and what it instead became. When growing up as a child decades ago, I dreamed of a bright future and great possibilities. What we have instead is a divided nation, high crime, drugs, perversion, a bad economy, crappy jobs, apathy, and a flood of immigrants who just don't know enough about our past to care. That past wasn't perfect, but I certainly do miss the "good old days."

Well, if you ask me, you're right. Personally, I think it's the human condition to periodically bring about radical change for the better and then spend the next years/decades/centuries perverting it for the worse until the next radical change. I don't see us escaping that cycle anytime soon. I also don't see it as anything new or novel. Great civilizations decline and fall, it's just how it is. The only thing that breeds strength is pain and hardship. Success breeds weakness and complacency.

Oh, I think we went "to hell in a hand basket" long ago. The question now is whether we'll go even deeper or climb back out. It appears the former, not the latter, is the far greater likelihood.

Currently grandparentless. One died before I was born, one when I was young enough to hardly remember, one was hospitalized while I was in Iraq and died while I was stationed halfway across the country and the last died while I was recalled to Afghanistan. All you can do is hope they know how you felt.

...said every old person for the last few dozen millenia. Not that there aren't usually good reasons to say it, it's just amusing how long the process of "going to hell in a handbasket" must take.
