Canadian shorebird flies through Hurricane Irene -- and survives.
Whimbrels, spend their summers breeding in the barren lands just south of the Canadian Arctic.
According to research biologist Fletcher Smith the little bird that flew into hurricane Irene as observed via her satellite transmitter she was sending little Shikabane Whimbler was able to survive the hurricane and the over 100mph windsheer because of her fat storage -- sort of like an insulation and this is what made it fly through the hurricane unharmed.

That is absolutely sad to hear that. I wonder when will this killing for sport become a punishable crime. Here we are at the door steps of deep space exploration but there are still uninformed and unevolved individuals allowed to carry a gun. Thank you for the link I will distribute it for everyone to see.

Two other Whimbrel with satellite transmitters, Machi and Goshen, flew through different hurricanes the same season and ended up on Guadeloupe where they were shot dead for sport. See ccb-wm.org/news/news_pressreleases.cfm for more information.

@Highwhistler Hello my friend Teka always nice to see you. Too bad there was no camera attached to the little fellow then we’d know for sure what life thrilling tale it can relay to its grandchicks lol. I’m sure she tumbled about a few times before Irene spit her out with a sigh of gratitude from the little one I’m sure.
Have a wonderful day my friend.

This is a remarkable story of resilience, determination and good luck. I wonder if he was spun around the great spiral of Irene a time or two ... before being sling-shotted out towards the Bahamas?
