I've been playing around with Windows Movie Maker and decided to make a video with subtitles.

I chose a 2004 news report about the Chavacano language from TVE, a TV station based in Spain.

Enjoy the video. I speak Spanish, but had some difficulty with translating certain phrases. But I think it's pretty much understandable.

Since I study Philippine languages and linguistics, I put some of my own commentary which is loosely based on a blog post I did on this back in 2004.

additional keywords: español languages filipinas ilonggo criollo pidgin

  • 600,000? When was the last census taken? That's close to getting extinct!

  • @bdzerda 2000. Zamboanga is very much healthy. The ones in Cavite, not so much.

Chavacano is the native language of the Latino Zamboangueno, of the Cotabaten, Caviten, of Ternate, of Castellano Abakay people... and we are Filipinos by race and by Citizen of the Republic of the Philippines.

  • @jbermud2

Chavacano is difinitely just one of the Filipino Languages. although, the only Filipino Language which is not a member of the Philippine Austronesian.

  • @Qaalvin

  • ThtOnePinoy you have such an ignorant mentality. This is one reason filipinos lack the ability to learn other languages and understand them because of mentality like yours. Pinoys learn everything from TV and since it's all tagalog this is where our life and country has gone. the only famous people now these days in the philippines are the same people that everyone sees on TV that speaks what? Tagalog! A lot of Filipinos have Spaniard blood thus where most of our last name came from.

  • Isn't Chavacano a creole based on Mexican Spanish, not European Spanish?

  • @sirach I agree very much.
