Correction: Mayan calendar is based off of days passed since a mythical starting date around 3114 B.C. A calendar round to the Mayans was 52 years long and the long count was created to refer to dates beyond the 52 year period (future and past). I was thinking of the grossly inaccurate claim by the 2012'ers that we cross the galactic ecliptic plane every 26,000 years, which again is more like 30 million years.

During this time, the north axial pole will move within 1 degree of Polaris in a circle. The shift from the viewpoint of the observer is 1 degree every 72 years. That's all.
