... following a recent e-mail from someone asking for a Blended Scotch review due to no Malts being available at their remote location, I have reviewed the second most available Blend Scotch in the World.

  • Hi Ralfy, What grades would you give Chivas Regal 18 Year Old and Johnnie Walker Gold Label?

  • @wesleytaylorviadomus

    88 and 83

  • If all possible, Can you review Royal Salute Please? Thanks.

  • @Genesisfan1989

    later this year !

  • Isn't Chivas Regal more like rum then whiskey?

  • @SteveWilson52

It is deliberately made as taste-easy as possible to sell more bottles.

It was. But the 2011 was so badly different that no opening up wouldn't take that heavy grain away. Chivas used to be ballanced and rich, but it was greatly dissapointing with that 2011 offering. It lacked the smoothness and sophistication, just heavy bitter grain and sharp alcohol strength. I will not buy Chivas again, especially when Isle of Jura 10yo is even cheaper.

Originally Chivas Regal was sold as a 25 yo. When the brand became popular, Chivas had to drop the age down to 12.

Just out of curiosity was the bottle from 2006 already open? I've found that a lot of newly opened bottles need a bit of oxygen to breathe and open up. Give that 2011 bottle another taste now and see if it's any different. Otherwise it means quality has gone down.

  • So, Chivas is the Audi of whiskies, does well what it's supposed to do, but not anywhere near as exciting as a Maserati.

  • i love the chivas, i dont really know why , but when i drink

johnnie w. i feel bad next day, that doesnt happend when i drink chivas or old parr

  • Everybody may hate me for saying this, but the Royal Salute 21 year old is not worth it. If you were to compare it to Johnnie Walker Blue Label or Gold Label and or Chivas 18, they are miles better than the Royal Salute. Maybe 30 years ago is was superb, but like every well known Scotch, the quality will go down hill over the decades. It has more of a flavor than Chivas 18 and Johnnie Walker Gold Label, but it does not taste something like that is a 21 year old and spends 200 bucks on it.
