Queen Elizabeth II of England visits Tonga for first and only time in December 19th&20th 1953. The only ever English Monarchy to ever set foot in our little kingdom.
Only British subjects bow / curtsy to the Queen. The Tongans who did so here were probably doing it out of respect but they weren't expected to, they aren't British subjects. However, monarchs never bow to other monarchs because they're equal in rank.
Well, I think in royal tradition that the Monarchs never bow to anyone....including other monarchs. So, it was appropriate that they did not bow to the princes and their wives (I'm assuming that's who they were). If you noticed, the Queen of Tonga did not bow, she just shook hands. That's the way it works.
Who was heir to the throne of tonga back then? And most certainley queen elizabeth II and the duke of edinburgh could of bowed back in return to the royals of tonga with respect. Very nice.
@Tufui100 So how old would you be now? Late mid 60's to mid 70's? Nice memories

@thr33wisemonks - Heir to the throne was Prince Tungi (who went onto become King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV 1965-2006)
