  • I want to point out your thumb for the first exercise is aligned with the rest of your hand. I read that this activates more of your back.

  • I don't think you're right about the lats disengaging, but I think what happens is due to perhaps underactivate insufficiency and upward scapular rotation (and elevation) maybe the load shifts to other muscles of the back.

    You could be right about lat emphasis but if we are okay with and maybe even want to build other back muscles, isn't it okay to stretch at the top? I am worried about tight lats making overhead pressing difficult so stretching at the top I hope helps it.
