If you understand the Alpha Couple, this is easily the saddest song in the entire catalog when viewed in retrospect.
I guess it doesn't mean as much if you haven't been there, but Tallahassee is like a punch to the sternum when you read all the lyrics and liner notes together. It's easy to write about screwed up people, but John Darnielle creates lyrical narratives that remind me of some horrible blend of Faulkner and Palahniuk. He's a national treasure.
