And why does any quality whole house water filtration system require a drain?

Both of these questions can be answered by the same answer.

Well specifically what we want with our product is to clean itself on
a regular basis. Usually every seven days is best. We want to expose
more surface area and therefore the life of the media. What makes the
media last so much longer is this turning over. And in our product,
the Healthy Home Solution filter, this is all done with an automatic
back-washing feature which requires a connection to a drain.

The water that drains out is clean water. There are no health
concerns with this water. There are no chemicals added nor does it
have any sodium or chloride added like a traditional water softener.

This water which is drained out can go to either the sewer, a
landscape drain or is often routed to irrigation and landscape
watering.
