The Grand Central HST was running with only the front power car providing traction on departure (1230) from Sunderland, and at some point the front power car developed problems and eventually failed, bringing the train to a halt just metres from the platform at Grantham. Apparently due to an "earth fault" (?) on the rear car, this could only be operated up to notch 2 without causing a shutdown, and the driver attempted to move the train this way but it wasn't enough to move the train, partly due to the curvature on approach to Grantham station.
Eventually an EWS 66 (66005) arrived from the north and attached to the rear of the train, pushing it into the platform where passengers were taken off and put onto an NXEC service. The video shows the 66 approaching from the rear, then pushing the train out of the station once passengers had disembarked, and finally pulling the empty train back through the station on the northbound line, presumably heading for the depot in Northumberland.
why couldn't the 66 have just taken the train on to KX?
