Back in September for VMworld 08 a team of engineers at VMware setup a demo to showcase VMware's power management features. This demo drives a heavy, mixed workload for an eight-hour day and shows metered power usage throughout. The workload used was VMmark and the total power savings were over 55%! This feature (DPM) is available experimentally in VI3 and will be fully supported with the next release.

I'm not sure exactly which capture you're talking about, but presumably you mean the first one where the standby power is reported at 60W. The decimal place in the power meter may be a bit tough to see given YouTube's video quality. On the frame I've inspected the reported power is 23.6, 20.6, and 15.9W. I added this up to roughly 60W.

Typically the SAN (or other type of shared storage) would have to be running, regardless of whether the VM hosts are connected and using it, so there are no power savings to be had there.

Is there a SAN involved? As I understand it, a SAN is needed to do what is going on here. If so, how come it was not included in the power monitoring. I believe that it would have to be included to be accurate to what this is going to replace.

Interesting experiment. I like the way you presented it in this clip, very convincing. Nice music choice as well. Could you tell me what that song is?

The song is a remix, by Justice, of Franz Ferdinand's "The Fallen."
