Pigeon Man's Speech - Hey Arnold

My all time favorite scene from Hey Arnold.

Arnold: What? This is awful, who did this?

Pigeon Man: People, Arnold.

Arnold: We can rebuild the cages and sweep up. Your birds will come back!

Pigeon Man: Of course they'll come back, they're birds, I trust them. I understand them, it's people I don't understand. You see, Arnold, it's time for me to leave here. Some people are meant to be with people. And others, like me, are just... different.

Arnold: Pigeon Man, wait.. none of this would've happened if I hadn't-

Pigeon Man: Arnold, don't be sad. You've taught me that some people can be trusted and I'll never forget that.

Arnold: Where will you go?

Pigeon Man: Somewhere I can live in peace with my friends. Don't you see? I have a mission to help pigeons everywhere. Wherever there's a bird in need of seed, I'll be there. Wherever there's a helpless flock suffering some abuse, I'll be there. Wherever there's a pigeon with a weak wing or broken beak, I'll be there.

Arnold: Vincent?

Pigeon Man: I just hope there's another Arnold where I go next. (he starts to fly away with his pigeons) Remember, Arnold, always wash your berries before you eat them and fly toward the sun.

Arnold: Goodbye, Pigeon Man.

This is one of the many scenes from Hey Arnold that gets me every time. It remains one of my favorite shows. Pigeon Man's speech is so intriguing, and the music is perfect for this scene. As most people have already posted, this was a show that actually had good morals and values, teaching so many kids how to live their lives. This scene was such an example. This is, IMO, the show that Craig Bartlett should be the most proud of himself for creating.

I think this episode went over my head when I was little. I think I still thought Pigeon Man was just a crazy guy at the end of the episode, but now that I watch it again, I see the sadness in his eyes, and how he wasn't crazy, just sad. Also, I don't think I ever noticed the 'face' in the sun as he flew away :)

I can't watch this without crying. The ending is bittersweet. After such a great day, Pigeon man gets reminded that humans are cruel. But at the same time, thanks to Arnold he has hope that perhaps their are more like Arnold, that are willing to get to know him and treat him and his birds with respect. Arnold gave Pigeon Man hope. Man, this show was so deep, truly one of the greatest.
