The first annual Al Gharbia Watersports Festival was staged by the Western Region Development Council (WRDC) in May 2009. This innovative nine-day event was held on Al Mirfa Beach in Al Gharbia, the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. Included in the festival were a kiteboarding championship, surf ski and kayak racing, beach volleyball and football, as well as swimming and sailing contests.

The sporting element of the Festival was complemented by plenty of entertainment on the beach. This included live music, a childrens playground, a classic car show, sand sculptures and a traditional souk, which opened each day after sunset. For those wishing to try their hand at water sports, professional trainers were on hand to offer free kiteboarding, wakeboarding and waterskiing tuition during the weekdays of the festival.

The festival also marked the initiation of the Al Gharbia Photography Contest. This contest, the brainchild of WRDC, is designed to encourage amateur and professional photographers to capture the essence of Al Gharbia on camera.

The end of the Watersports Festival was marked by a spectacular firework and laser show on the beach.

To add to the festivity there was a grand prize draw, which included prizes such as a boat and two jet skis.
