Io spero, e lo sperar cresce 'l tormento:
io piango, e il pianger ciba il lasso core:
io rido, e el rider mio non passa drento:
io ardo, e l'arsion non par di fore:

io temo ciò che io veggo e ciò che io sento;
ogni cosa mi dà nuovo dolore;
così sperando, piango, rido e ardo,
e paura ho di ciò che io odo e guardo.[1]

però se alcuna volta io rido o canto,
Follo perché io non ho se non questa una
Via da sfogare il mio acerbo pianto.[2]

se voi credessi, vivirei contento
le pene che' vostri occhi ognor mi d'anno;
e questi boschi pur creduto l'hanno,
stracchi già d'ascoltare il mio lamento.[3]

I wait, and the waiting grows the torment:
I cry, and the crying feeds the lax heart:
I laugh, and my laughing doesn't comes in:
I burn, and the burning doesn't comes out:

I fear what I see and what I feel;
each thing gives me new pain;
this way waiting, I cry, I laugh and burn,
and I'm scared of what I hear and see.

but if I ever laugh or sing,
is just because I don't have any but this way
to vent out my sour weep.

if you believe, I would live happy
the punishment that your eyes give me evermore;
and these forests have believe it too,
wearied of hear my lamentation
