This fine piece relates the "revolutionary" changes in Buddhist culture during Japan after the classic Nara and Heian phases. It is here that the most influential and long-lasting sects of Zen and Jodo or "Pureland" Buddhisms come to dominate the stage. The changes in China (are as ever) recapitulated in Japan, but with a twist...the old sects remain, albeit in a lingering state, in Japan, whereas the persecution of Buddhism in China prevented the continuation of a number of the classic Chinese schools.
