I asked my love to take a walk
Just a little ways with me
And as we walked and we would talk
All about our weddingday

Darling say that you'll be mine
In our home we'll happy be
Down beside where the waters flow
On the banks of the Ohio

I took her by her pretty white hand
I let her down that bank of sand
I pushed her in where she would drown
Lord, I saw her as she floated down

Darling say that you'll be mine
In our home we'll happy be
Down beside where the waters flow
On the banks of the Ohio

Returning home about twelve or one
Thinking "Lord, what a deed I've done?"
I killed the girl I love, you see
Because she would not marry me

Darling say that you'll be mine
In our home we'll happy be
Down beside where the waters flow
On the banks of the Ohio.

  • I love these guys solo! but together they are almost magical!

  • If someone wrote this same song today with a rock beat, it would be criticized and censored. Bill Monroe was singing edgy songs way before parental advisories were even thought of.

Great song too, it's so awesome to be able to find original bluegrass at the touch of a button! Thanks!

  • I first heard this song sung by the Louvin Brothers. Doc and Monroe sing it a litle differently. Great "golden age" stuff. I love it.

  • @webbyter And Knoxville Girl was a big one

  • Their voices blend great together!

  • why do i always teary eyed when i hear such awesome tunes

  • @dpotter79 -- As others have said, this is not Bluegrass. It's much older. It's not even played Bluegrass style. Nobody's taking a hot licks solo break. No high lonesome. Just a good old traditional song. Lots of folks sang this long, long long before Big Mon and Doc came along, long before Bluegrass evolved.

  • @dpotter79 Yeah it's all because of 9/11

  • The "Father of Bluegrass" I grew up listening to him and all the old masters. Todays Country sounds more like rock & roll

  • @dpotter79 Murder ballads have an honored place in our Kentucky / Appalacian musical heritage. Songs like Pretty Polly and Down In The Willow Garden are other ballads that feature the murder of their lovers. You are right... edgy songs like this one have really been a part of music for time out of mind.

  • tear jerker for Ms Ohio to hear......

  • Beautiful song! The harmony is great. Thanks so much!
