Fergus and Belwood Ontario Windfarm Protest Oct. 26, 2010

People from Fergus, Belwood and Surrounding cities in Ontario gather to protest plans to construct Industrial Wind Turbines in the area. At present, 169 turnbines are proposed for the area, though this protest was for a set of 4 by WPD Canada, a branch of a German Company.

McGuinty has removed our democratic process, denying municipalities the right to turn down this deceptive not-so-green energy source, and instead opting to accept the Billions of dollars in government revenue this will offer him.

Industrial wind turnbines:

Are linked with illness in humans and animals
Kill wildlife including valuable bats and birds
Ruin the aesthetics of natural landscapes
INCREASE the cost of electricity in the areas in which they are built
LOWER property values and make selling difficult or impossible
Are propelled by FOSSIL fuel when not being moved by the wind
Only offer 13 Cents/Kilowatt, where solar offers 80 Cents
Can be dangerous if damaged or when they fall.
Most Farmers regret the decision but are unable to back out.

It isn't about not wanting to change. I believe in alternative energy, but Wind Turbines don't fit into the definition of "green energy" since it uses fossil fuel to turn the turbines when the wind isn't strong enough, and they wreck the natural surroundings....I'd say it doesn't qualify.

It would be a good idea to research for yourself what happens when these wind turbines go into a town-I can tell you are young, but I'm sure you're also smart! It's your generations that can to the most!

U r gonna lose this fight u know right? If the HST couldn't be stopped u think any 1 cares that ur standing out there with signs saying you don't want it? Bigger protests for more important reasons have occurred and failed... what are you or any one else who are concerned over this issue going to do that would actually make an impact? Standing/Shouting doesn't get you anywhere. Want some advice? Pool some cash together amongst you and talk with that, money talks louder then you.

@TheGateTraveller There's a reason these monstrocities are not at a set back of 550 meters in Toronto-over there, it's 5 Ks. There's a reason they target small rural communities-because this is not where the money is. I agree that pooling finances to hire an attorney is what we need....will you be first in line? If you weren't at the protest, then what have you personally done to educate yourself and get involved? It's very easy to stand on the sidelines and judge. But at least we did something!

As a past resident of Belwood (I grew up happily there. Went to school in Fergus. It's my home), I'm very disappointed in my old home and the community members. We live in an age where we're trying to go out of dirty energy and make a positive change. Here Belwood and Fergus have an opportunity to roll up their sleeves and be part of the solution but instead the argument is "They look ugly" or "Not on MY land". Well, it's sad to see. I guess you can't ever go home. :(

Congrats on your efforts. Hope you prevail. From the fight in Puerto Rico, next door to UN designated Biosphere Reserve where developer intends to plant 40 turbines!
