Making it more top heavy will increase its rotational inertia and that could help dampen those jitters, or just switch it over to decaf.

it might be to top heavy, or what ever is driving the wheels might be a bit loose.

General idea is right, it can definitely be scaled up to make your very own segway for a fraction of the price.
