  • I remember when they built it, spent so money to build it, then everything went downhill! Just when Montreal was becoming a great hub of business, the weirdos of Quebec wanted to seperate, that's when everything fell apart! All of a sudden companies started moving their head offices out of Quebec and the airport traffic started going down! Montreal was not the hub anymore, it moved to Toronto! Mirabel became a sad statistic! Too bad!

  • Indeed, when you look at Pearson airport it is what Mirabel was supposed and planned to be... Mirable was actually built for a pretty good price of 300M$ in 1975, whach was actually 50M$ less than budgeted... I can only agree that quebec's attempts at separation is probably one of the main reasons why it failed...

  • @66alex6699 Quebec wanting to separate had nothing to do with Mirabel's demise. The airport flopped because there was no proper public transportation links to the island of Montreal. Airlines saw it as much more logical to serve Pierre Elliot Trudeau Intl since it's on the island and much closer to the downtown core.

  • @emiratesA380NCL I slept overnight on my honeymoon in this terminal when the overseas flight was allegedly delayed to go to Greece and Israel September 1980.

Marriage August 31st/1980 Toronto Ontario Canada.

Upon return to Mirabel October 1980 my inlaws kept us waiting hours to pick us up and take us to our home at 72 Morrisson Ave. Town of Mount Royal, Quebec.

If I knew then what I know now would the course of history be different?

    Why is this named Mirabel?

  • @sonic2277 Why would they do that after spending a $ Billion dollars on Trudeau ! Expansion plans are even underway at Trudeau !

  • did you have permission or did you just walk into the terminal?

You are right, as a quebecer I know for a fact that the separatist movement has lots do with big corporations moving to Toronto and slower growth in the Montreal area much to the benefit of Toronto but the politicians will not publicly admit to that. A move back to Mirabel is inevitable as the Montreal Dorval airport cannot handle all the traffic, especially the lack of infrastructure around the airport which was never built for this many flights and car traffic.

  • It would be interesting to see what Montreal would be like today if the separatist movement didn't happen. Toronto would not be considered the economic capital of Canada.

I am sure Montreal today would be a city parallel to Paris, London and New York. It had the potential.

Mirabel would have been used at it's full capacity and it's Trudeau airport would become the "city" airport similar to the Billy Bishop airport in Toronto.

    Sad.
