Naturally when you heat water you create steam. Steam expands. And so ALL water heaters are fitted with a safety valve that releases excess steam if the pressure rises too high. This explosion will only happen if a safety valve fails. This is a rare thing but it does still happen which is why yearly maintainance on water heaters are mandatory.

did it blow the pipe, valve off the top of the cylinder?

and can i have my 30 seconds back for reading your lame ass comment lol and another 60 seconds back as well for having to type this lol again

it would have to have a flue to start with being internal and this sort of thing is very very rare to happen with gas appliance cus they incorporate a fail safe device meaning that if is should overheat the unit will fail to off automaticly turning off the gas supply, there are diffrent devices out there and they should always fail to safe(off)

He put those up there to absorb the water (after the explosion)
The point of the video was to show my folks because at the time they lived 10 hours away. I turned it off as much as possible which is why it wasn't shooting water everywhere anymore, but it was broken, hence then explosion, and that's why it was still leaking. Three hours after this all took place the maintenance guy came and fixed everything and my roommate slept thru the entire ordeal. It was a pretty crazy night, and yes this video is boring as hell.
