I agree with JBFOD, this is just like the transitions between many of our classical era stages, and just like then, everything started off slightly unusual but got accepted eventually. Yes, the key components of a song are present, just because rhythm doesn't have a steady audible beat doesn't mean it isn't present. The melodic, and harmony lines are just unusual to people who are used to what we consider music now a days, but eventually this to will be accepted.
