it was a global trend in Russia after collapse of Soviet Union - socio-economical crisis eroded family institution. There was also a high rate of suicide due to the same reasons and peculiar national culture of suicides: suicides are a form of revenge.

I hear the situation has improved by now.

Births: 13,133 (birth rate 10.1)

Deaths: 19,682 (death rate 15.2)... why do they commit suicide?

traditionally one would commit suicide in order to avenge himself/herself - say, someone offended you unjustly, you go and hang yourself at his door - now the offender is ruined as well. But presently there's no romanticism behind suicide - it's this crisis in Russia - meaninglessness, misery, hopelessness, solitude - something general. Birthrates dropped because people are more conscious about having babies, being able to raise them. With all this uncertainty how can you have one?

this is common for the rest of Russia - it has nothing to do with being Chuvash.

very interesting... it sounds pretty weird to hang yourself just as revenge... very strange society, very strange indeed... i hope it has changed, suicide should only be an option if you are going to get tortured to death, otherwise its very stupid to kill yourself

:) nowadays they mostly take suicides for granted, just as "unstrange" societies do. Something like: "He hanged himself? Whatever!" Back than it was a tragedy, it was shame. Nowadays people consider suiciders "stupid". :)
