Excerpts from the 1980 film work 'Birth'. The artist enacted a 70 hour performance piece around the subject of birth, and from the film document of the session, stitched together 160 subtly different short films - or 'movements' - and spent the better part of a year in post-production to achieve the then state-of-the-art special effects. The work was a cerebrally complex performance piece which presented a meditative fusion of the act of birthing and the experience of being born. What resulted was a tour-de-force video exploration of the most basic of human experiences.
Simultaneously lauded and reviled at the time it was produced, the work was never shown outside of the village in Kazakstan where the performance piece was originally staged and shot.
