@tubaking4801 You bask within the mediocrity of the masses who know not what they speak.

Sorry, my mistake it says it is played by the RAI orchestra in Italy

Respond to this video... Giulini in his late 40s conducting The Philharmonia in London I believe. He was very thorough in rehearsals and always drew the best from the players. At concerts and rehearsals he was such an inspiration yet always quietly spoken and modest

@flutebat The orchestra is The Philharmonia in London I think and the music --'Pictures'

I agree, the gesture of young Giulini was very odd and ugly. I've this DVD; but I've listened many later beautiful recordings and I've seen him many times conducting in the late '80 and early '90s: in rehearsal, at La Scala, and with the Verdi and Rai orchestras; In his old years he was completely different. (Sorry for my english)

I don't see an orchestra. Who or what is he conducting? Is this a screen test or something? I got to see him in his "swan" phase later, and it was poetic and lovely. He was a physically beautiful human. Was his conducting useful for the musicians? I don't know.

West Side, Homey!
I saw Carlo Maria Giulini conduct many times when he was music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Even in his 60's his conducting was truly electrifying. There was still plenty of motion and gesturing. You cannot imagine seeing live, Giulini directing the enormous thundering Dies Irae from the Verdi Requium or the wonderfully stormy opening of the finale from the Brahms 1st symphony. The gods loved this man.

@PoetOfTheSpheres Actually as a conductor I do know I am talking about but quite a bit of his gestures look erratic and jerky especially in this video
