A rare music gem, recorded around 1927. Before there was Mattie, Anna or Rosetta, there was... Arizona Juanita Dranes--a blind COGIC missionary, singer and pianist who is credited as the first person to ever play piano on a gospel record. Her first recording was in 1926, some six years before Thomas Dorsey's Precious Lord. Arizona Dranes is the musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe credited with influencing her raucous, syncopated style; Jerry Lee Lewis also credits her playing as an influence. Missionary Dranes' style of barrelhouse piano and intense sanctified singing essentially created what we know today as the gospel beat. Encouraged to record by COGIC founder Bishop C.H. Mason, Dranes recorded 16 songs for Okeh Records, from 1926-1929. As a result of the Great Depression, she stopped recording; however, she continued to travel and play for Bishop Mason at COGIC conventions and convocations.

Too bad so much contemporary gospel music lacks the GENUINE spirit and sound heard on this fantastic record recorded by Dranes over 80 years ago. I've been a fan of hers for over 30 years and just wish I'd been able to catch her live and in-person. Her song "He Is my Story" is also wonderful! I can play it on the piano myself but not nearly as well as this true gospel artist.
She was a member of the Famous Roberts Temple COGIC under Bishop William Roberts in the city of Chicago. She was a great figure of the Women's Department of the COGIC, she was for education and foreign missionary work
I grew up on this song. And my Choir sang this song Sunday which I really enjoyed. But this early version is similar, yet different. With the old style piano and musical type sounds like an old western movie song. WOW, good to actually hear how our people sang and worship at the turn of the century. Alot of our history is written and left up to the imagination, but to hear it (and at times see it) offers a new way of understand our past, especially the Church.
I read an article about it in the Austin (TX) paper. The article was talking about her induction into the Texas Music Hall of Fame or something like that. There are also some articles on the net...just Google it.
