Yeah the soviets pulled out due to internal problems, but Alexander the Great, arguably the most successful general in history, could not subdue the Afghans. Also the British empire when at its height could not win against them. Your right we should gain the people's trust, but burning their holy books and pissing on their dead is not going to help us. And the majority of the Taliban are just Afghan peasants, doing what they have done for centuries, protecting their land.

@ewan26001 unfortunately we have a job to help the afghan people. we can't go in and bomb their country and just hunt terrorists. we have to win the people over to help beat the taliban. the soviets pulled out due to the fact that internal pressure on the soviet union made them pull out. the soviets pulled out in 89 and less than a year after the soviet pullout the USSR ceased to exist. we have to get the afghans ready to combat the taliban and possibly pakistan the source
