the engine they used is called Frostbite Engine. It allows for the destrucatble enviroments and for the bullet drop you see in games, along with many other things. Frostbite is DICE's new engine. I belive they used it in Mirror's Edge also. Its going to be revamped for BFBC2.

Honestly, it looks extremely awkward, when the player-kit appears at the dead players' head and falls down to the ground.

Strange way to solve animations like that in an otherwise technically progressiv game

Same here. I've been playing 1943 since it came out, and am having a hard time switching back to Bad Company's controls.
