This was a common limpet (Patella vulgata) I filmed during a day of fieldwork at Easdale in Argyll on the west coast of Scotland. The animal had already consumed about 2cm of the live kelp frond! Here you see what it did when I moved the kelp just out of reach... Keep watching, the real action is at about 50s!

  • These things live along the shore right? Well if they do, then there's alot of these on the west coast of Norway.

  • @mannes09

Yes they live intertidally (between high and low tide on rocky shores) from the Mediterranean to the Arctic. In Norway I think they will be mainly Patella vulgata, like this one, but there are several species of limpet found in Europe. Hope you like the video.

  • Lovely film, but are you sure it's a common limpet? It lacks radial ridges and resembles a 'Chinese Hat' (Calyptera Chinensis). What do you think? Pat Vulgata, Editor, 'The Limpet', Penzance.

  • @floydyopz

Yes. I am certain it is Patella vulgata. I am currently writing my PhD on the subject of their diets. This individual was about 40mm in length and was found quite low on the shore. As I'm sure you know, the shell morphology of PV varies with both wave exposure and elevation. Also, my understanding is that Calyptraea chinensis is a filter feeder and would not be chowing down on Laminaria.

What is 'The Limpet'? Sounds intriguing...

    Kind regards.

    Eonwe1.

  • @eonwe1 Would they be able to digest boiled lettuce?

  • @valstar1000 I'm not sure. Why would you want to feed them boiled lettuce? If you want to keep a limpet as a pet I would recommend getting it some brown seaweed (Fucus, Ascophyllum or Laminaria) to eat. I don't think cooked lettuce would give limpets the nutrition that they need.

  • They don't taste to bad either, we recently did a video on how to eat them! Nicely recorded it's not very often you get to see them grazing

  • @eonwe1 Ah! Just wondering. And yes i liked the video! Thanks for uplading it too! Interesting video.
