  • @themodernguitarist Tuning makes no difference. The x-mode just boosts mid frequencies before the preamp which tightens the tone, but reduces the overall body of the tone. It thins it out and make the amp sound "small". The amp is already extremely tight without a boost, just keep the gain at 6 or 7 with the x-mode off, as long as you have good pups, you'll be chugging out Slayer all day.

    The X mode sounds good if you tune to Drop C or lower, IMO. Sounds better with an OD pedal if you wanted tighten it up with higher tunings, IMO. Since I play thrash, I like a really tight tone.
