  • It is common practice to conduct a Pilot Monitored Approach (PMA) at airlines. One pilot will fly the airplane on instruments until the runway is visible by the other pilot. The other pilot will take control and land once the runway is clearly visible. You'll notice at "minimums" the approach lights come into view. It's legal to continue the approach, but a PMA is safer as it mitigates spacial disorientation. If we didn't have the approach lights we would have discontinued the approach.

  • One problem: flying below minimums without having the airport in sight is illegal.
