Matt Hobgood strikes out a batter during a May 29 CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinals game between the Norco Cougars and the Mater Dei Monarchs. The 6-foot-4, 245 pound right-hander was named the 2009 Gatorade California High School Player of the Year. Hobgood has verbally committed to Cal State Fullerton, but may turn pro after he is drafted in the first round or first supplemental round of the upcoming 2009 First-Year Player Draft. During this game, Hobgood was clocked as high as 95 MPH on the radar gun. In his addition to his fastball, Hobgood has an above-average curveball in his arsenal. He also throws a changeup and slider.
