Footage of the Top Banana winning the 1979 Bushmills Irish Whiskey Offshore Race in California.
The start/finish line was right at the mouth of Newport Beach Harbor. The winnng team was Charlie McCarthy, owner/driver; Ron Morrison, navigator; and Paul Lesnewski, throttleman.
The 205 mile open ocean course had every type of treacherous type of water, from flat spots to sneaky Pacific rollers to cross chop. In addition, there was the annual migration of the whales and an immense spectator fleet scattered all over the ocean course. As Charlie McCarthy noted, "... sometimes it got very dicey."

Awsome race, awsome racer. Everyone who knows Charlie knows he is a competitive racer and a gentleman. My brother and I used to tune props for Charlie right out of the box while working for our father. Check out HORBA for more information on classic offshore racing.
