Maria Reyes is the woman who inspired the character Eva in the film "freedom writers". Her story began early on. While living in an urban world of segregation and poverty, Reyes felt that there was no hope of escape. This changed the moment Reyes walked into her high school English class and met her teacher Erin Gruwell. Gruwell had such impacted on Reyes life, giving her hope and planting a seed that would lead to change. They formed a group that would eventually call themselves "The Freedom Writers." Today their story is being told on the big screen and the lessons and experiences they shared are being taught to teacher's nationwide inspiring change across the country.
