- During the Cousteau expedition to Polynesia, France was carrying out underground nuclear tests on the atoll of Mururoa in the Tuamotu Islands. To help allay fears about radiation, the French Defense Department invited Captain Cousteau and his team to observe a test blast and to study the effects on the surrounding environment. Cousteau divers documented fissures, created by the concussion of the tests, lacing the reef—this one went down more than 590 feet.
- A l'époque de l'expédition Cousteau en Polynésie française, la France réalisait ses essais nucléaires souterrains sur l'atoll de Mururoa où a été implanté le Centre d'expérimentation du Pacifique, à l'extrême pointe de l'archipel des Tuamotu. Le Commandant Cousteau et son équipe ont été autorisé par le Ministre de la Défense française à se rendre sur l'atoll et à effectuer des plongées à l'intérieur du lagon et autour de l'île, afin d'évaluer les conséquences des tirs sur sa couronne corallienne. Les plongeurs Cousteau découvre alors d'importantes fissures dans l'enveloppe de calcaire de l'atoll.

please remember when we decided to have nukes,we were 300km away from a certain communist block( of which bulgaria was part) by then threatening to invade us on a daily basis...
i'm not,as a frenchman proud of this;i'm happy however it probably was the reason we maintained our independance,and still do.

Thanks God these SOB's stoped the nuclear tests in the Pacific! They must pay dearly for this crime.
