We test signaling devices, aluminum foil, the inside of an Altoids can and a signal mirror.

  • A CD works pretty well too and it has a hard case to store it in of the CD wallets. Remember the hole in the mirror is a sight to aim the reflected light. Also a stainless steel bowl that is polished on the inside works really well too. Sort of a parabolic dish for light. Oh yea and Mylar emergency blankets offer a lot of surface area to really shoot light out a looooong way. Make a frame and stretch the and toe the blanket onto it to optimmize reflective surface. Really good vid, 5 stars.

  • All great ideas. Thanks. We will have to try some of them in the future.

  • i suggest ditching the plastic one. after just a few carries in the pack i gets scratched up real quick and not usable. stick with metal and glass even though the are heavier! great video!

  • Good points.

  • thats more than 100 yards

  • That was a great comparison of different materials used as signalling mirrors! Intersting video! I just finished a video on mirror signalling technique. I attached it as a comment.

  • aluminium FAIL

  • I think it is a good idea to have two mirrors in your survival kit. Mainly because two mirrors gives you the ability to see the back of your head / body. Some if you get a wound like a cut on the back of your head you can inspect and treat it a lot easier if you can see it.

  • yea i know that method....i know the ones with the hole and the one where you use 2 fingers to aim.....but i was wondering if there were other methods

  • BCB and UST(Ultimate Survival technologies) make signal mirrors with a "retroflecting" aiming device. You can use them with one hand. When you look through the hole, the spot where the light hits appears as a bright fireball/small sun

  • anyone know another method to aim the signal mirrors other than the hole and/or 2 fingers?...just wondering

good test, now i know that mirrors work the best

  • Excellent video, it was very informative. Thanks for posting it.
