In this episode of Canoeing TV, Andrew Westwood explains how to launch and land a canoe as smoothly as possible. Sponsored by ExOfficio http://www.exofficio.com Produced by The Heliconia Press http://www.helipress.com
At :59 seconds, the man in the blue dry top "steadying" the canoe should be directly behind the stern and holding onto the stern deck with both hands and arms CROSSED to truly stabilize the canoe for the person getting in.
This video could have been much better. Why not teach them to have the canoe floating free before stepping in? Although it's fine on a shallow sandy beach, if you prop that stern up on a steep beach or on the rocks as so many do, you create a very tippy situation. Even as shown with the smooth beach and calm conditions the canoes were more tippy than they needed to be.
Canoes are pretty stable until you put people in them. If you keep your center of gravity low it does not matter how you get in it as demonstrated by this stupid guy trick. of the worlds fastest canoe launch.
I suggest students sit first on the dock then put their feet in the canoe. I also stress the use of the paddle across both gunwales and on the dock to add stability.
