A quick demo of one of photoshop CS4's new features:
Content aware Image scaling.

This technology was first shown at Siggraph 2007. You can find the original demo video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qadw0BRKeMk

Unlike normal scaling which is oblivious of an image's contents, Content aware image scaling is able to calculate areas of an image that are more or less important, and so is able to distort them less when resizing.

The feature can be found in the Edit menu, or with the keystroke Shift+Option+Command+C (Mac) and Shift+Control+Alt+C (Windows)
Regular scaling is Command+T (Mac) and Control+T (Windows)

  • does anyone know how to normal scale?

  • @Alyxm Watch the video and read the description.

You see normal scaling on the screen and the description even gives you the keyboard shortcut that you need to press to do it.

  • Gimp had it first.

  • Aye, I didn't say Photoshop was the first =P

I'm not surprised that gimp had it before, it's open source, Adobe only releases a new version of their 'creative suite' (including photoshop), once every year or so.

  • Still, it's a nice feature to have.

It's alright when used to stretch out objects, then place them back into the original photo.

  • Well yeah... I wouldn't make a movie detailing a feature if I didn't think that the feature was useful and/or cool.

Place them back in the original? What are you talking about? The Great thing about this method of resizing is that you -don't- have to remove an object to keep the background in proportion when you re-size it, or vice-versa.

  • @JohannesShadow ye I did that... I was just so frustrated because I have a dissertation to write lol

  • Close call. You only beat me to mention GIMP had this first by like 4 months.

What a cool feature on either program though. I do this for the fun of seeing how well the seam carving holds up with gimp vs cs4.

  • I know, what I'm saying is you can stretch out an object, say a person's neck, and it will appear to be in proportion. Then you stick it back in the original photo, move the head, and tada - neck stretch.
