Applied Linguistics study is turning me into a feminist! This article http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/us/09assault.html?_r=1&src=me&ref=us published on International Women's Day seems like an intentional example of power imbalances enacted in language.

  • @ToriUTK Indeed!

  • @donotconcede I think it might be scary everywhere. I have a friend who theorizes that the more economic troubles there are, the more emotional and conservative society becomes. It would be interesting to chart that trend!

  • wow

  • @haiqin I agree. Things are getting really f'd up here in the US. Its like they have us going backward like 60 years. The problem is the media being owned by just a few thuggish corporations and not having a real free press here anymore. NYT and WaPO have gone backward. The US is in big trouble as real voices are not being heard. :/ Do you have a spare room? Its getting really scary to live here.

  • @donotconcede It seems unbelievable that this would be in the New York Times! I also found that there's a proposal in Georgia law to require people to refer to rape victims as 'accusers'. !

  • That's redneck country in Texas for you. Texas has got some great people, but look else what Texas has given to this country. I know some really scary people there. In truth, women's rights have really gone backward. Sadly young women today have no knowledge of the history of women's sufferage etc. What they are given are "Desperate Housewives", "Army Wives" or Britney Spears to emulate. That story was just one of hundreds of disturbing things going on here at home. Lucky to live abroad.
