actually it's pretty common. they like to play with their beaks. a woodpecker used to wake me up at 4:30am almost every morning when i lived in the forest..... he would rap his little beak on the metal chimney vent on top of the house. eventually i learned to tune it out and he apparently found another chimney to rap on
