Doris (Oh, Doris! Where Do You Live?) (Gus Kahn/Joe Sanders) - The Collegians mit Gesang, Parlophon 1927 (German pressing)

NOTE: God knows who "The Collegians" were. Quite a few hot dance bands either had such name, used such nick, or at least added the word "Collegians" to their brand names (including such great orchestras likePaul Whiteman's or Rudy Vallee's). This band is really hot and plays the famous Kahn/Sanders foxtrott with a spin & riff, typically for the so-called "white collegiate style" of the late 1920s.
-------------------------------
Added later:L from YT friend kr103 I got the message: The original Okeh issue (40870) says Justin Ring's Collegians on its label". So - tyhe problem with "The Collegians" band seems to be solved. But the next one occurs: who knows, who Justin Ring was??

  • What fun! Great work.

  • Good arrangement of pics/music. You also did a good job of optimizing audio quality of a 1927 recording. Thanks.

  • Not much known about Justin Ring except that he was a percussionist who played with Joe Venuti, and who led Okeh studio bands like the Yellow Jackets. Great record!

  • Justin ring (1876-1963) was a classically trained pianist, percussionist and conductor and one of the oldest "Hot Band" leaders, active as a composer and arranger even before the turn of the century. From 1924 on, he recorded for Okeh as the leader of the "Yellow Jackets". He later recorded for ARC (Banner) in 1930, and in 1934 made what I believe are the last recordings under his name for Decca. He played with Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Lonnie Johnson, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller.

  • The orinigal Okeh issue (40870) says "Justin Ring's Collegians" on its label. I guess the German Parlophon at that time thought nobody there would know this rather obscure American composer and pianist, anyway.

  • I'll tell you after the election, D. Actually, I had at least two great-aunts named Doris.

  • Oh Barbara, are you conspiring with Doris to keep this secret from us?

  • Really fun! And I think I know where Doris lives, but I'll keep it secret for now. Love those acrobatic pix. . .
